The trip

What the drive to Hampi is actually like.

Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage site spread over a very large area, which is the thing most first-time visitors underestimate. Having your own vehicle for the full two days is the difference between seeing four monuments and seeing fifteen.

Road and permits

All within Karnataka, so no state permit. Good highway as far as Hosapete, then narrower local roads. There is a lot of walking at the site itself, so plan where the van drops and collects you.

When to go

October to February. It is genuinely harsh from March to May, with daytime temperatures that make walking the ruins unpleasant.
